Arndu St Pauls Preschool is a community based, not-for-profit education and care centre caring for 49 children per day aged between 3-5 years of age. The Preschool was established in 1985 by Oatley Anglican Church to support children and families in the community.
The preschool is funded by the State Government through the Department of Community Services.
Arndu is run by a management committee consisting of 4 nominated parishioners from Oatley Anglican Church and 3 parents from the children attending the centre.
Arndu is open from 8:30am – 4 pm Monday – Friday. The Preschool has two classes, which are broken into two-day allocations:
2 days - Monday + Tuesday, OR
3 days - Wednesday – Friday. The preschool is open in accordance with the NSW School Term and can be found online at our website.
At Arndu we believe in the importance of supporting each and every child to reach their full potential. We do this by taking a holistic approach to the way we teach; using the Early Years Learning Framework, National Standards, Regulations, children’s interests and individual child development.

Prep 4 Preschool at Learning Links Oatley is a is a gentle introduction to supporting and promoting your child’s learning in a small group setting. The supported playgroup provides a relaxed, safe and engaging environment where play activities are tailored to enhance the development of each child. Our professional and experienced Early Childhood Educators and Therapists are available to provide information and support to help your child communicate, move and play – in preparation for a smooth transition to preschool. You will also have opportunities to meet other families and for your child to learn alongside other children.
Prep 4 Preschool is suitable for families with a child aged from 2 years with additional needs, or who are facing difficulties regarding their child attending an early learning. Siblings are welcome to attend.

Positive Thinking Clinic
School holidays are now over and Positive Thinking Clinic had a wonderful block of workshops which focused on kids emotional wellness. It’s always so wonderful to see regulars and new kids join in. Some of the amazing topics were: solutions for anxiety, getting organised for school, grief and loss, self compassion and mindfulness, deep conversations (teens), managing worries, discovering strengths, managing anger, friendships, fears and healthy body.
Remember, you don’t need to have a problem to attend, you may simply wish to learn tools /skills for such areas of development. Also, it was noted that some kids (especially the teens) preferred to participate in workshop programs, but on a one:one basis. So I offered this and it was a great decision. Well done to the families and kids who decided to attend. May you feel more enriched and empowered having done your self empowerment /self development sessions.
The feedback was great, thanks for attending.
Coming up in August we will include once again some adult sessions; working toward calm, hypnosis for change, mindfulness skills, and HSC stress [as it gets closer].

CASS Hurstville Child Care Centreis now offering free targeted lessons! We offer 4 different topic’s within these lessons. Chinese lessons. Yoga and Fitness lessons. Cooking/ culinary lessons
Artistic workshops.
We provide Chinese lessons each Thursday and on varied/ alternate day’s we provide art lessons in our arts studio.
We have also incorporated yoga and fitness lessons to provide movement for our children, usually taking place on a Monday or Friday.
On Wednesday’s cooking/culinary lessons are included into the program
Our Chinese lesson incorporate the use of our smart board and our educators knowledge to enhance learning. Children learn Chinese songs, Rhymes, poems and stories to further the skills in this language development.
Our art lessons utilize our lovely art studio, allowing for a more open space to be creative and constructive. We use a range of artistic media and various materials to work with within our lessons. Wood work lessons have also been incorporate into this space to further develop fine motor skills and creative learning.
Our fitness and yoga lessons provide opportunity for the children to build on important gross motor skills and also helps to incorporate spiritual and physical health which are fostered within this program.
The cooking/culinary lessons allow for the exploration of not only cooking skills, but scientific concepts also. It incorporates healthy eating and sustainability within simple and informative cooking tasks.

Rainbow Cottage News
Rainbow Cottage has been part of the community for 15years now and in this time we have made so many memorable moments with children, families and Educators in the community. Not long ago we held our 15TH Birthday at the centre, celebrating with the children, their families and there was smiles all over...as well as yummy cake, a fun afternoon had by all. We love the relationships and friendships we have built with the families past and present.
We pride ourselves on our relationships not only with the children, but with the families. We regularly organise Educator Parent Nights out, giving parents to get to know our Educators away from the centre, but last month we attempted something new. We took over Hoyts cinema with a group of 50 of us (including Educators, parents and children) meeting up on a Saturday morning to go watch Toy Story 4, and it was great!! The children loved seeing their teachers and peers out of the service and it was loads of fun, as well as a great movie.
We have been exploring our sensory skills and using a variety of messy play activities to allow children to explore with their hands different textures, mediums, consistencies and materials. I think the Educators love exploring our ‘messy play’ activities as much as the children. Come in and have a look and what we get up to during the day.
The children at Rainbow Cottage have also been working on their emotions and understanding how different emotions feel. The children have a keen interest when describing emotions and associating it with the Inside Out movie. The children are able to recognise and identify emotions related to themselves and to the movie. This has been an ongoing project for us working with our emotions and we link it to our Positive Living Skills program as well as combine our teachings from Amanda at the Positive Thinking Clinic. Some of Preschoolers will be going Amanda at the Positive Thinking Clinic on Saturday 3/8/19 to take part in the next Emotional Intelligence Workshop. These workshops are monthly and are available for all our Preschoolers to attend.
Banbury Cottage News
With this cold weather we had in June & July our children are enjoying the yummy soups that our cook Sally has added to our winter menu! Lots of yummy veggies and fresh garlic bread makes soup days our favourite days. Our Preschoolers are interested in knowing what’s in their lunch and will often ask Sally as they see her in the kitchen. She tells them all about the ingredients, and also asks their opinions of what they like, what foods they would like on the menu next time and what are some of their favourite foods at home. All this conversation is taken in and we listen to the children, by adding their suggestions to our evaluation of the menu cycle and we utilise ideas they give us for our next menu.

We had such a fun 3 days with bikes/scooter day, and of course HELMET day! There was no riding bikes or scooter unless they had their HELMETS ON!! All the children had the opportunity to bring in their bikes/scooter and Helmet and we made sure everyone took them home. Lots of Conversation on road safety, biker safety, driveways, parks and footpath riding was part of our week. Group discussions are great for language, great for those quiet children who become shy, giving them a little more confidence to share their knowledge. We love learning from each other at Banbury Cottage.
Some of Preschoolers will be going to see Amanda at the Positive Thinking Clinic on Saturday 3/8/19 to take part in the next Emotional Intelligence Workshop. These workshops are monthly and are available for all our Preschoolers to attend.
We will be holding our quarterly Emergency PRACTICE Drills with the Educators and Children in August, and we hope to get a visit from the Fire Brigade to talk to us about Fire Safety and what to do in an emergency. We run a variety of Drills at the centre, allowing us all to get familiar with our emergency procedures and improve were needed.

Wondering how you can help prepare your preschooler to learn how to read, spell and write?
Ensuring your child has good speech and language skills is important. Also of critical importance is laying down some foundations for learning literacy at school.
So – be inspired and get ready to have some fun with the following activities!
Syllable Counting is learning how to break words up into their smaller parts. For example; “birthday” has two syllables, “birth/day”. “caterpillar” has four syllables, “cat/er/pil/lar”. Don’t forget the one syllable words such as “chair”.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to activities to build skills in counting syllables; here are a few ideas… ensure to make it enjoyable!
Get physical – clap it out… or skip, jump, hop!
Get musical – toy drums, guitars, keyboards, maracas etc… Are great to tap, strum, play, shake to the beat of the syllables.
Name items you can see in the room of a house, or whilst in the car, and count out the syllables.
Build a tower- take turns counting syllables using blocks; and build a tower as you go; the tallest tower wins.
Syllable word lists can be found easily on the Internet – practice counting syllables in words with 1-4 syllables.
If you aren’t sure where to break words up, remember that every syllable has a vowel sound.
Rhyming is a great way to teach your child new words and get them to think about how words can relate to each other. It sets the foundation for your pre-schooler to learn about word families and the different sounds that letters can make. Rhyming words have a repetition of similar sounds e.g. rocket/ pocket; pie/ sky. Some activities include;
Sharing books that rhyme – the most obvious start! As your child gets to know the book; have them complete the sentence for you (fill in the missing word). You can make this fun, by substituting a nonsense rhyming word, and have your child give you the correct version.
On the go – point to items wherever you are, and take turns thinking of rhyming words. E.g. “tree… see!”
Place items on a table, have your child select the word that best completes your sentence E.g. If items include rock, hat, toy, ball; you then make up a sentence – “There was a large cat, who wore a large…???”
Roll a ball to each other, exchanging rhyming words with each turn.
Sing nursery rhymes!
Even if your pre-schooler comes up with a nonsense word, it’s okay, you just want them to get the idea behind how rhyming works.
Hearing the first and last sound in a word
Be sure to focus on the sounds heard (rather than letter names). For example; “Can hear a ‘ssss’ sound in ‘sun’? What else can we think of that starts with ‘sssss’“?
Use family names/ photos
Catalogues
Story books
Sound Scrapbook – create a collage of all things starting with a certain sound e.g. “m” page, “s” page etc…
Hearing the last sound can be trickier…
You may give a visual cue, and emphasise the final sound as you say it. E.g. “Room” (whilst pointing to your lips)
Remember to be clear when talking about sounds vs letters to your child. E.g. The letter ‘s’ makes a ‘sssss’ sound etc.
Sounding out words
This is not about the spelling of the words– it is about sounds!
Pre- Kindy; focus on words structures that have 2-3 sounds E.g. ‘go’ (‘g’ – ‘o’) and ‘cat’ (‘c’ – ‘a’ – ‘t’). With a word like ‘shoe’, there are 2 sounds, ‘sh’ – ‘oe’.
Use visual cues
Coloured counters
Fingers
Objects such as blocks
Use movement; steps, jumps, tapping, pointing, whilst saying each sound.
When ready, incorporate practice visually scanning LEFT to RIGHT with objects such as the counters, blocks.
I may as well say it again – HAVE FUN! – That is how kids (and adults) learn best!
