CENTRE NEWS

Rainbow Cottage We were lucky to have CSIRO Science Incursion at our centre during August for Science Week. They came in and transformed the 3-4's room into a extra exciting room of science activities. All tables and areas within the room had different science experiments set up for the children to interact and experiment with. Our visitors discussed with the children all the fun ways we can create science and talked about 'what is science'. The children were extremely engaged, putting their hands up to ask questions and also answer questions. Watching them sit and listen, seeing their little minds working ,wondering and getting really excited to get up and have a hands on approach to all the experiences was wonderful. We love all things science at Rainbow and greatly appreciated the initiative that CSIRO has put together for children in early learning centres.

Banbury Cottage  Book Week at Banbury is always fun. It's a time that teachers love, as they get to get a little more creative with their own costumes. We had so many children dress up over the week as their favourite book character and bring in their book to go with it. A big thank you to all the mums and dads for going to the effort, the smiles on the children's faces as they entered our doors with pride for their costume was priceless. And we always have our gigantic box of dress ups available during the day for those who may have been rushed in the morning or forgotten. And let's not forget the fancy face painting our very cool Educators Jen & Gabiie can do! So lucky to have them. Our next dress up theme is going to be around our Banbury Birthday in October when we turn 19yrs old!! It's going to be a wild jungle party!!!

Little Dolphins What a busy month we have had at Little Dolphins!
We welcome all our new families who have started at our service and are excited to share this journey with them!

Little Dolphins children have been busy exploring through learning and intentional teaching as we plan a variety of experiences for Science week where the children explored cause and effect. The children have also enjoyed book week as we went on fairy-tale adventures and explore literacy and learning.

Little Dolphins and our sister services have collaborated together in hosting a fundraiser fun day to raise awareness and funds to contribute to the farmers who are currently battling the drought. The services have teamed up with our local butcher in Rockdale who was generous enough to supply us with our sausages for the day as well as collaborating with members of the community who were available to offer their service in doing scissor cuts for children and curls for adults, we also have family members who are in the baking profession and also balloon art for children. All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to http://www.aussiefarmersfoundation.org.au/

Babyland Child Care Centre
This month at Babyland, we celebrated both National Dental health week  and National Book week.

Throughout Dental Week, the children participated in a wide range of oral hygiene discussions, art and craft and activities, helping to embed best practices in their daily routines. We also received a visit from Sydney Dental Services when all the children were invited to sit down and listen to a very important dental hygiene message from Dr Tim. With the help of his big, giant tooth mascot friend Pearl, Dr Tim demonstrated tooth brushing best practices and discussed the importance of brushing every morning and every night and made every-one feel at ease about visiting the dentist regularly.

One at a time, the children had the inside of their mouths examined, with  Dr Tim checking for overall oral health, any signs of decay as well as bite.

Finally, everyone was gifted a goody bag with a brand new toothbrush to take home!

For National Book week, the children worked together, creating a display to reflect this years’s theme ‘Find your treasure’. Activities were also developed around the theme of literacy and evryday, the children were invited to bring in their favourite book from home to share with their peers, highlighting the importance of reading.

We had a great month at Babyland and look forward to our upcoming father’s day celebrations.

Little Dolphins, Rainbow Cottage, Banbury Cottage & Babyland Child Care Centre
On Saturday 25th August our centre's united to create a family fun day at our centre in Brighton Le Sands Little Dolphins to raise money for the farmers doing it tough from the drought. This all came along by the children bringing up the drought during group discussions at preschool. The teachers investigated with the children what the drought meant for the farmers and decided to see if we could help.

So we put our thinking caps on, and decided a fun day for the families. We united together as a community does, with our  Educators, families and local businesses we put on  a sausage sizzle, food stall, jewellery stall, a face painting table, haircuts, jelly beans guessing competition, balloon figurines and hampers for raffle. Visitors brought some $$ purchased items and all money raised is heading over to the farmers. A huge thank you to all our families that visited and helped create this community event. Our fundraiser is still going on till the end of August as we are still collecting donations from families over the week.

PARENT INFORMATION

Eating & Toddlers

After the age of 12 to 18 months, there is a definite change in children's eating patterns as their growth slows down and they require less food. It is common for parents to be concerned that their toddlers are not eating enough or seem to be becoming fussy with the type of food they will eat.

Toddler eating behaviour:

  • eat less
  • like to eat frequently
  • may become fussy with their food
  • like to handle and explore their food
  • may develop strong likes and dislikes ... and frequently change their minds about what they like and what they don't like!
  • frequently mimic the eating behaviours of their parents

Meal times

Parents need to provide a safe, comfortable environment, and food that is nutritious and appropriate to the age and stage of your toddler.

Remember toddlers enjoy:

  • eating with the family and they will often try to eat from other people's plates
  • eating without interference from others as they will use a spoon as well as their fingers - but be prepared for a bit of a mess and meal times to be time consuming
  • eating small meals or snacks at regular intervals
  • helping with simple food preparation - toddlers will often snack on the food as they help you
  • having things ready straight away - they don't like to wait for anything so BEFORE sitting your toddlers in their high chair have their food ready to eat
  • drinking milk and juice - this can decrease their appetite - so limit these types of drinks or add water to dilute the concentration

Things to remember:

  • Aim to make mealtimes enjoyable for the whole family ... not a battleground
  • If your family normally eats their evening meal late, your toddler may be tired and will need to eat earlier
  • Provide a variety of foods
  • Encourage safe eating habits - always get your child to sit down to eat
  • Praise your child for eating a range of foods rather than the quantity of food they eat
  • Reduce distractions during mealtime - turn off the television

Toddlers like attention:

  • If behaviour is positive - praise
  • if behaviour is disruptive ue distractions, or remove them from the table and re-offer once again a short time later
  • Always wash your hands and your toddler's hands prior to handling food

Reassure yourself with the following thoughts, young children:
·  eat when hungry
·  never starve to death from refusing food

If Still Concerned
Keeping a record of what your toddler eats for a week can be helpful. You might find:

  • They eat more food than you thought they did
  • There is a pattern of too much milk or juice that is decreasing their appetite
  • Too many snack foods are being allowed between meals
If you remain concerned ask for help from your child and family health nurse  or local doctor.
