Exciting times for Positive Thinking Clinic (PTC).  Feeling grateful for the recognition and being nominated for small business finalist.  Much appreciated.  Its so wonderful being considered with all the diverse work that has been done with such diverse people (young and old).

PTC is currently running a “mindfulness and weight” campaign.  Jump on board and receive tips on having the right mindset to help control your weight.  Each week brings 2 short live videos, 2 inspirational posts, an educational article, and a blog to keep your mindset on track.  Follow PTC on facebook and instagram.

During the month of April we held a number of workshops on emotional wellness for kids. A great turn out.  We created a group called emotional wellness and kids. You are welcome to join via positive Thinking clinic business page.

Each month PTC promotes certain packages.  In May PTC is offering packages on hypnosis for weight release; relaxation and meditation for teens; yoga and mindfulness packages for teens and kids; and single session hypnosis on depression.

Remember, I use my skills as a counsellor, hypnotherapist, NLP master, and more, to help individualise a treatment plan or program to suit each individual.  If you are curious about what I do, please give me a call, or check me out on my website.  Amanda Dounis Facbook @Positive Thinking Clinic : instagram@positivethinkingclinic

Learning Links
If your child is showing signs that they struggle with learning, have social, emotional or behavioural issues, or are behind their peers with speech development or fine and gross motor skills, Learning Links is here to help.

We offer a range of assessments, including cognitive/IQ, academic skills, dyslexia, autism, ADHD, behavioural, speech and language, and occupational therapy. Our professionals can determine your child’s strengths, needs, preferred learning style and any appropriate interventions – an important first step in understanding how to best support them.

Following each assessment, you’ll receive a comprehensive written report to outline results as well as recommendations for your child.

Learning Links understands that every child is unique and has different strengths and challenges. That’s why we work closely with each family to provide guidance and the best possible program and opportunities for them to reach their full learning potential now and in the future.

To find out more about assessments, contact our friendly Customer Care team on (02) 8525 8222 or visit www.learninglinks.org.au. Our Peakhurst Learning Centre is located at 12-14 Pindari Rd, Peakhurst NSW 2210.

Menai Swim Academy came about by a local family who realised the need for an aquatic facility in the Menai area. The family had extensive swimming background, which spread across generations. The involvement with competitive swimming at national levels in a number of disciplines gave the family the knowledge to create a unique teaching methodology which achieves maximum results.

The centre was established in July 2000 and as a privately owned swim school we try to keep a personal persona with every customer. Over the years the centre has grown and we offer the local community the below aquatic activities.

  • Learn to Swim
  • Squad Training
  • Pool Parties
  • Aqua Aerobics
  • First Aid and Resuscitation

We believe we are in the business of saving lives. Learning how to enjoy the water is a must in Australia so play it safe and learn to swim.  Contact us today.

Happy Feet Child Care

We would love to announce that we have a new cubby house here at Happy Feet Child Care. This was requested by the children and arrived last week. The children are loving playing in the cubby house as they develop their sense of wonder, creativity and imagination. We are currently still have a few vacancies so please book yourself in to come for a tour.

Rainbow Cottage Child Care Centre
A very busy April we had at Rainbow Cottage with lots of fun experiences planned throughout the month. We love to celebrate all cultures at Rainbow, we are a community, and  we share our experiences with the children at our service. We had the Easter Bunny hop by and visit our children and Educators, sharing a treat and making lots of little faces smile.
The Children and Educators were lucky to have some players & the mascot from the Cronulla Sharks visit the centre a few weeks ago. The players were introduced to the children, some avid footy lovers knowing exactly which team the boys were representing. The players showed the children how to pass, and we practised this and other footy skills. We love welcoming people from local communities down to the service, it is great to see the children get all excited. We have been really enjoying the beautiful weather outside, and have had lots of opportunities to work on our children's fundamental movement skills. Lots of balls games with throwing and catching and lots of climbing with our new climbing structure we have been focusing on children's upper body strength. It is important that children are exposed to a variety of experiences that assist them in developing skills, both gross motor and fine motor. We plan fundamental movement activities into our program over the week, but also have many opportunities for spontaneous experiences focusing on a variety of skills.

Some of our preschoolers have taken part in our monthly Emotional Intelligence workshops held at the Positive Thinking Clinic. It has been a great opportunity for them to learn new skills to take home, meet new friends and further develop their emotional intelligence.  We are looking forward to continuing these workshops and linking these to our Positive Thinking Skills program and program in each of our rooms. If  you would like to know more, please contact our centre or check out the Positive Thinking Clinic's website for more information.

Banbury Cottage Child Care Centre
Such a busy month of events and activities at Banbury Cottage.  We love the feedback from the children in our Preschool room that have attended the monthly Emotional Intelligence workshops held at the Positive Thinking Clinic, held by Amanda Dounis. So far the children have been happy with their experience, telling us they would like to go back, and telling us all about what they did, what the room looked like and the friends they made. We also work alongside Amanda to utilise the experiences she is using with the children, to incorporate it into our day with the children. Skills take practice, and sometimes lots of practice, and we know that when we work together as a team or group great things happen. And our team or group is not just our Educators, it includes the parents, the children and of course Amanda and Educators from our other services. We are looking forward to learning more in the upcoming workshops.

Our Preschoolers have been patiently waiting daily to hear of their Teacher Jen and her location on her long long long walk through Spain. We have a huge map and a minature cut out picture of Jen whom we move to different locations on the map. Of course our children all miss her and eagerly wait her return next month, but they are also loving seeing all the wonderful scienic photos she sends us, that we print and stick to our wall displaying her adventure.

The Easter Bunny made a special visit to Banbury during our Easter Hat Parade and even got in on the dancing and singing, and all the children were very excited to go home with a yummy chocolate egg.....to eat after dinner.....and the Easter Bunny was sure to give them the chat about eating to much chocolate, and making sure they shared with their mummies and daddies.

PARENT INFORMATION

Introducing Body Safety & Protective Behaviours – Top Tips for Parents

With around 1 in 5 children being sexually abused before their 18th birthday, it is extremely important that every parent/carer sits down with their child to discuss protective behaviours with their young children. However, most parents feel ill-equipped to do so and are still in the dark about the reality of childhood sexual abuse. Michelle Derrig, child protection advocate and author of protective behaviours picture book ‘Only For Me’ shares her top tips below:

Understand the statistics
Before introducing the topic, it is essential that you understand the reality of childhood sexual abuse. According to the Australian Criminology’s website almost 90% of victims will actually be abused by someone they know and in approximately half of these cases the child will be abused by a family memberThe other key point to understand, is that not all childhood sexual abuse is perpetrated by adults, with Bravehearts now quoting that ‘somewhere between 30 to 60% of childhood abuse is perpetrated by another child or young person’.  This means that abuse often occurs outside the typical environment you imagine –it could be while children are playing with their peers, on a playdate, at a park, or even whilst at school or their childcare centre.

Provide specific information
To shift the power away from perpetrators, it is important that you don’t just speak in general terms. Instead provide children with specific examples of inappropriate behaviours. For instance:

  • Teach children that it is wrong for anyone to take a photograph of their private parts or show them any images of private parts on any sort of device.
  • Teach children that it doesn’t matter if someone tells them that it’s a game, rewards them, or gives them treats or gifts – it is still not ok.
  • Highlight that these rules apply no matter the person’s age, gender, status in the community, or their relationship to the child i.e. friend, family or stranger.
  • Empower them with the knowledge that they can say ‘no’ at any point that someone’s touch doesn’t feel right - including kissing, stroking, cuddling, snuggling or tickling.
  • Help children to understand the physical cues which may indicate that they’re feeling uncomfortable. i.e. sweaty palms, butterflies in their tummy, feeling sick.
  • Identify that abusive behaviour is never a secret, even if someone threatens them, or if they think they are to blame;
  • Remind children that no matter what, abusive behaviour is never their fault and that they won’t be in trouble.

Practice responding to unsafe situations
Initially, get the children to practice saying ‘no’ in a loud voice; for those aged 3+, also get them to practice a sentence like ‘don’t do that – I don’t like it’. If dealing with older school aged children, you should also provide them with an alternate method to extricate themselves from a situation e.g. saying that they need to go to the toilet, or they think they can hear mum calling.

Develop their network of trust
Help children identify five trusted adults that they could go to, if they were ever worried, or if someone did the wrong thing. Reinforce that nothing is ever so awful that they can’t tell someone about it; and that if they did tell someone and the adult didn’t help them, then they must keep on telling until someone does.
