Hearty Health
Book Week is coming up in the Child Care Calendar and there is no better time to help encourage healthy eating habits in children than by reading a good book about it!
Here are our top 3 recommendations for Book Week in 2018 which focus on health eating:
We Are What We Eat– by Kristy Hammil- According to the description, “Your kids will start to recognize the difference between foods that are nourishing to their bodies and foods that aren’t.” Great for kids 2-10 years old.
Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Mama and Dr. Grizzly attempt to help their children understand the importance of nutritious foods and exercise.
Gregory the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat – Gregory is a goat that only eats fruits, vegetables, bread and butter. This disappoints his parents because they wish he would eat tires, shoelaces, tin cans, and cardboard. The kids think it’s hilarious!
Hearty Health are passionate about providing fresh seasonal meals to children in child care which are delivered directly to child care centre fridges every day.
Contact Hearty Health at www.heartyhealth.com.au or 1300 728 762 to book a tasting of our delicious menu that your kids will love.
CENTRE NEWS
Rainbow Cottage
At our centre we provide a huge variety of experiences for the children to be able to give them opportunities to explore. Science to some may be a subject but in an early learning centre like ours it's not just about experiments its about exploring, discovering & nurturing the children's curiosity about the world around them. We allow them to make connections between what they already know and what they are learning. Over the past few weeks we have been creating lots of opportunities for the children to engage in ' science' from outdoors exploring natural experiences to inside creating creative science. We have some white flowers currently soaking in various jar of coloured water to see if we can change the colour of the flower.
NAIDOC week was celebrated at Rainbow Cottage with the children and our local community, a huge thank you to MURU-MITTIGAR for coming down to share your experiences with us, and for the amazing resource you provided the children of Rainbow Cottage to use, a beautiful book of all the Australian animals and their indigenous names. Our Educators were able to create lots of wonderful opportunities for the children to explore.
We have successfully transitioned to the new Child Care Subsidy scheme. If you are unsure how the system works please give us a call, and we can try help give you information to see what best suits your needs. If you would like to pop in for a visit to have a tour of our centre, give us a call, we would love to show you around. We currently have some positions within our rooms.
Banbury Cottage
Being part of the local community and having wonderful services around us providing our children with opportunities and learning is such a blessing. A huge thank you to our local fire brigade for coming down to talk to our Banbury kids about fire safety. The children were wowed by the big red fire truck, excited by the flashing lights and siren and even more excited that they got to use the water hose on our yard. We do a variety of drills with the children to give them skills to know what to do in an emergency, and we encourage all parents to do the same. Do you have a emergency plan at home? Have you discussed it with your children or practised it? If not I think it should be something to do over the next week. Remember children need to learn what to do and what NOT to do. If you ask a child what to do in a fire the first thing most will say is to ring 000, this is not correct. We are teaching our children at Banbury as advised buy the Fire officers to make lots of noise, wake up your parents leave your toys & belongings and get out of the house, then when safe call 000. Remind children not to hide, they need to make lots of noise to alert people where they are.
Another way of getting involved in our community this month was by exploring Aboriginal & Indigenous culture during NAIDOC week. Our wonderful Educators created a wide range of experiences for the children to explore. We made wattle cookies using wattle that collected from local parks and used a recipe that we sourced from an Aboriginal book. The children learnt about aboriginal art, both painting and in clay. Our preschoolers explored clay and made their own echinda's after reading 'The Echidna and the Shade Tree'. We learnt about foods of the past, the land , the sky and the people. We will be planting our own wattle tree in our yard to use for future cooking experiences at Banbury, a beautiful aroma and taste the wattle provided in the biscuits.
School Tree Planting day was a success with lots of gardening experiences, experiments and parent involvement. We source all our soil and plants from Rockdale Community Nursery as there is a beautiful collection and we love working with our locals.

Does Gratitude really help us feel more content with life?
We hear a lot about gratitude and how it can help us feel happier and more content with life, but does it really work?
Robert A Emmons, social scientist and the author of ‘Gratitude Works’, has been studying the science of gratitude for many years. Called the ‘world expert’ on Gratitude by Berkeley University in California, Emmons has completed countless studies involving thousands of people aged between 8-80 around the benefits of gratitude and how it works to definitely increase our feelings of contentment with life, when it comes to the past, present or the future.
His Clinical Trials indicate that the practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects in a person’s life. It can lower blood pressure, improve immune function, promote happiness and well-being and incite acts of helpfulness, generosity and cooperation.
Gratitude is defined as ‘A felt sense of wonder, thankfulness, and appreciation for life’. It ‘Helps us savour our positive experiences’.
Let’s face it, as we…….. (Read more of this article here ………)
